What is the California FAIR Plan? How Did the Eaton Fire Impact Policy Holders?
The California FAIR plan is a not-for-profit catastrophe insurer. The plan was established in 1968 following the riots and brush fires of the 60s so that all California property owners had access to basic fire insurance. Now as insurers pull away from California due to wildfire disasters, more California homeowners rely on FAIR as a last resort insurer when traditional insurance is no longer available.
According to the insurer, 12 percent of structures in the Eaton fire were covered by FAIR – representing nearly $800 million in exposure. While FAIR has stated that it has the means and mechanism to ensure all covered claims will be paid, the Eaton and Palisades fires are shaping up to be among the costliest disasters in California history.
Additionally, as a last resort insurance plan, many homeowners may be underinsured and face difficulty restoring their property to the state it was in before the fire.
How We Can Help Eaton Fire Victims?
At Bridgford, Gleason & Artinian, we have helped over 10,000 wildfire victims recover compensation for their losses. In our experience, insurance may not be adequate for our clients to recover the full cost to restore their homes, especially for those covered by Cal FAIR. For this reason, we have already filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison on behalf of Eaton Fire victims. If you lost your home in the Eaton Fire and are underinsured, our attorneys can:
- Help ensure that you receive an accurate valuation for your losses that include secondary structures, landscaping, hardscaping, and trees.
- Recover compensation from defendants that go above and beyond your homeowner’s policy limits.
- Go after other losses including loss of use costs, emotional distress, personal injury, lost income, and more.
